Computing Setup
  • Install Visio 2016 (Our data modeling tool for Windows users)
Description: If you are using a Windows computer, follow the directions demonstrated in the tutorial video below to install Visio 2016 on your machine. A FREE COPY is available to all iSchool students via Microsoft's Azure Dev Tools for Teaching Web site. I have provided a link below for your use. If you have difficulty accessing this free version, please contact the iSchool Help Desk. Or, stop by our Online Lab Session on Sunday morning.
  • OR, Prepare to Use MySQL Workbench Diagrammer (Our data modeling tool for macOS and Linux users)
Description: For the limited amount of data modeling that we do in our class, I have found that the best alternative for non-Windows users is to use the MySQL Workbench Diagrammer in an adaptive way. Please play the video tutorial below for an example of how to adapt this diagrammer for the purpose of our data modeling assignments. I typically discourage students from using some other diagrammer for our data modeling work. If you are convinced that you have a compelling case for using a different diagrammer, please seek permission using our Request Center Portal before using a different diagrammer.
